]]>Start with Bittersweet Chocolate Morsels, (the real chocolate, dark ones)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
In large mixer bowl combine & beat until creamy:
Add one at a time & beating well:
In a separate bowl combine as follows, stir with spoon or folk until evenly mixed:
Gradually add 1/3 to 1/2 flour mixture to butter mixture at a time, blend.
Once well blended ADD by stirring in: (since I have a paddle mixer, I'm still able to use my mixer to blend at this point, as the mix get rather stiff to work with.)
Drop by rounded teaspoon to tablespoon (whatever size you prefer) on cookie sheet. Bake at 350 for 9 to 12 minutes. We like crunchy cookies so we go close to 12 minutes. Cool on wire rack.
The difference in Lady Jane's Hemp Flour compared to the Hempagizer Protein Blast is the amount of fiber to the protein. I used either, depending on what I have on hand. These yummy cookies are a boost of protein, fiber, magnesium and iron. Good any time of the day!
Enjoy taking any of your family favorite recipes and substitute 1/3 to 1/2 the flour called for in your recipe with Jane's Hemp Flour or Hempagizer (Jane's hemp protein powder). Excellent GF flour choice with excellent nutrition. #EatSomeHemp

Plant-based protein is becoming a popular niche today. Lady Jane has been focused on plant-based nutrition since 2009. It's nothing new to us. What many consumers fail to realize, is plant-based proteins are not created equal.
Big brands pay big money to sway people into thinking they are buying and eating something of nutritional value. Pretty smiles from social media influencers capture people with not only artificial lives, but artificial food, fortified and isolated ingredients. Making claim of a healthy food choice, when in fact it's not!
Hemp seeds are a complete food. Not only is it a plant-based protein that carries 20-amino acids, the fatty acids (omegas), vitamins and minerals make it an excellent choice to include in your daily meal planning.
Add Lady Jane's hemp seeds to:
You get the idea!
The reason you may not know much about hemp seeds is because for the last 80-some-odd-years, people have been led to believe hemp is something that it's not.
Eating hemp seeds won't get you high, you won't fail a drug test either. It's a gluten free, plant based protein. Ounce per ounce, nothing is more nutrient dense than hemp seeds.
Educating people about hemp seed nutrition has its challenges because of censorship. Social media platforms Facebook and Instagram have blocked and deny us the ability to run sponsored ads. Our posts are seen by few people. Even this blog may end up having limited impact, but we try!
Other news media platforms are also swayed because networks don't want to take on something they feel to be controversial unless the intention is to have you believe what they want you to think - it's not about truth. Instead of educating people about what hemp actually is, most news medias have continued with the lies and yellow journalism that Randolph Hearst put before the public in the 1930's.
Hearst and other special interests intended to squash hemp cultivation throughout the world, and it wasn't really marihuana they were after even though U.S. drug policy was used to create this social injustice.
Not only does hemp provide one of the most nutrient dense foods we can eat, most anything made from petroleum (including PLASTIC), trees, and cotton can be produced from the hemp plant. Providing the raw materials for tens-of-thousands of useful everyday needed products. Check out this detailed YouTube(after all, if your in compliance with #stayHome #staySafe, you probably have the time)
During this COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of healthy eating is imperative; eating hemp seed foods should be part of your daily diet. I don't say that because I sell hemp seeds, I sell hemp seeds because it's a food people need.
Hemp seeds from little packs to big packages should be readily available to our first responders, medical personnel working in hospitals, the Army Corps of Engineers, food care packages being put together for people in need; in your cupboard to add to your meal. Our raw bar mixes are ideal for quick 'n easy nutrition.
What's the issue? Ignorance compounded by outdated federal and State policies.
Our immune system needs real food with real nutrition. Many of our foods have been compromised with GMO's, artificial ingredients, dyes and stuff that's causing our body to fight for it's life creating autoimmune problems.

]]>What about the brain?
The protein you eat also has a major influence on brain activity, your energy, and ability to focus. (This is major for growing children). For your brain to function adequately, the central nervous system requires a number of amino acids found in protein foods.
The amino acid serine play important roles in the central nervous system function. Amino acids tryptophan, tyrosine, histidine, and arginine are used by the brain for the synthesis of various neurotransmitters and neuromodulators. (Sounds rather important - right?)
Tryptophan is the rarest of the essential amino acids found in food. The availability of tryptophan to the brain can alter behavioral factors such as alertness, level of depression, aggression, and pain sensitivity.
Well guess what?
Hemp seeds contain tryptophan and all those other amino acids... plus more.
So why is that so important?
All protein is not created equal. Just because a food is considered high in protein, does not mean it’s a complete protein.
There are nine essential amino acids a food must contain to be considered a complete protein. Eleven amino acids are produced by the body. The other nine we must get from foods. It takes 20-amino acids bonding together in a chain to form a protein.
The body does not store essential amino acids. If we do not get all nine essential amino acids together in the same meal the body will just break them down for energy instead of building proteins.
Hemp seed is special because it contains all 20 amino acids!
Think of this, proteins are required for building the antibodies our immune system needs to protect us from illnesses; but if your immune system is already compromised, maybe depending on the body to build those needed proteins from the non-essential amino acids in the body may be a struggle. Hemp will bring it all to the table.
The brain needs not only amino acids for good function; it needs essential fatty acids too. Fatty acids help rebuild brain cells, slow cognitive decline, and also strengthen the synapses in your brain related to memory. What’s super cool about hemp seeds is they serve both needs for the brain by providing protein and omegas (the good fats).
We aren’t making claim hemp seeds cure disease, we’re just saying hemp may give your body the ammunition to combat autoimmune, and may help brain function. That can encompass a lot of stuff too, from Parkinson’s to Alzheimer’s; coeliac disease to diabetes; to just staying strong and healthy to begin with.
You don’t have to be a body builder or vegan to appreciate hemp’s outstanding nutrition; everyone should be eating a serving of hemp every day to at least 3 times a week.
Hemp is a plant based protein that does it all.
(The following formula is a guideline and may help you to determine how much complete protein you require each day:
The resulting number gives you the number of grams of protein you need each day for proper overall body health maintenance and brain optimization.)

]]>On September 26, 1820 Colonel Robert Gibbon Johnson went to Salem, New Jersey, stood on the courthouse steps making a spectacle of himself eating one tomato after another while the crowd watched in amazement. Folks were sure he'd drop dead at any moment! He didn't.
Fruit or vegetable? On May 10, 1893, the Supreme Court of the United States set forth a ruling that legally made the tomato a vegetable. The reasoning behind this ruling was not based on science; it was to induce the ability to collect tax dollars. At that time, vegetables were taxable, fruits were not.
Along comes fruit merchant Joseph Campbell in 1897. With the help of a chemist, they developed a method of condensing tomatoes. Soon to be... a popular canned soup sold by Joseph Campbell & Co.
It's been a couple centuries since the tomato eating demonstration, but as verity verses myth continues so does Cousin Mary Jane. She looks to Colonel Johnson for inspiration in knowing it took a lot of years for public opinion to accept tomatoes as a delicious nutritious food.
Next time you're munchin' on a grill cheese sandwich with a cup of tomato soup, thank Colonel Johnson for that yummy combo. Just like Cousin Mary Jane boasts that hemp seeds are not marijuana; he was the guy who was compelled to prove tomatoes were not the belladonna they had been led to believe.
Cousin Mary Jane is standing on the courthouse steps shouting to the world, "You won't get "high" from eating hemp seeds! You won't fail a drug test! Hemp's a gluten free, plant-based protein food packed with fatty acids, vitamins and minerals providing maximum nutrition with minimum consumption"... and mighty tasty to top off your tomato soup too.

Don’t let myth and political propaganda keep you from good nutrition. Hemp is not the belladonna that some would like you to think!

Essential fatty acids (also known as omegas) are necessary for healthful body function. That's why they have "essential" in thier name. The standard U.S. nutrition label does not include any percentage of daily value needs for omegas, which is truly a poor labeling system for American when it comes to picking out healthy foods. (I personally find the U.S. food labeling system for indicating nutritional value to be rather poor anyway.)
Fats, proteins and carbohydrates are not all created equal. Good fats are extremely necessary in brain, muscle and joint function as well as other body needs. Clean, complete proteins (meaning it includes the 9-essential amino acids) have better digestion and absorb into the body much easier than isolates such as whey protein. Hemp seeds have 20-amino acids making them top notch!
Carbohydrate need to be complex, meaning they need to have fiber backing them up and are not just a source from simple sugars.
Don't let the hype confuse you. Make it simply. Hemp seeds are a perfect food! They are not only the perfect Keto diet food match, they are a super food for all people to eat daily. Hemp seeds are an anti-inflammatory food too.
Hemp seeds are easy to add to your daily diet. Eat 3 to 4 tablespoons a day. Nab them right out of the bag, add to salads or veggies. Put them in your smoothie. Throw them in your oatmeal or cereal. Just eat them.
The magic is in its nutrition! #EatSomeHemp for the best in healthy body function. No kidding. Your body will thank you by feeling better.
Buy whole hemp seeds which includes the fiber for a crunchy treat or hemp hearts which are soft in texture similar to pine nuts or sesame seeds. Tell 'm Cousin Mary Jane said so.

It's awesome folks are demanding better healthful food options! It's a must if you want to feel good. Lady Jane's got what you need! Hemp seeds. We don't say that because we sell hemp seeds, that's WHY we sell hemp seeds. Making hemp part of your daily diet will give you the nutrition you need for healthful body function.
For over 10-years Lady Jane and Cousin Mary Jane has been spreading the goodness of hemp seeds, advocating and working toward getting hemp cultivation back into U.S. farm fields. This wasn't a simple desire, it was a responsibility. We're in tune and recognized many food choices are making people ill. We knew the nutrition in hemp seeds could help bring better quality of life to the world.
It's been our mission from the onset to bring better options for better healthful food choices. We felt nothing would serve this better than hemp seeds.
As a Baby Boomer, it's one thing for me to witness my peers facing old-age, pot-bellies, and health problems. What's shocking is seeing Generation Z (those born mid 1990s to mid 2000's) being plagued with chronic illnesses that used to be old-people diseases. It's real. Poor food choices are encouraged with mega marketing dollars, misconceptions and bold-face lies.
The Silent Generation was told lead in gasoline was not harmful to our planet, smoking cigarettes posed no health threats, plastics were nothing to worry our environment, and hemp was a "drug". Hemp is NOT a drug.
Hemp seeds provide maximum nutrition with minimum consumption. The problem is, most people don't know. So all you Millenniums', Gen-Xers', and Gen-Zers', you need to vote with your dollars.
Take back your earth. Know Lady Jane's got what you want and need! Hemp seeds! Baby Boomers, get with it, not only should you be eating hemp daily, so should Gen-Alpha too. #EatSomeHemp
]]>They're asking things like, "will taking those bcg's without tnt get my hands and shoulders feeling better so I can get back to my knitting? Thelma at church told me I should try that marijuana weed stuff that won't get me all highed up. She says her back is feeling SO much better and she's enjoying working in her garden again!"
"You got that stuff?"
You know what I'm talking about?"
You go grandma!
Where's the CBD!?
We're face to face with many of our customers on Saturdays at Detroit Eastern Market. On a personal level it's rewarding when we hear success stories and testimonials, especially from older seniors. Young and old alike, better quality of life is what it’s about. Providing access to top quality products is what we work to achieve every day.
For consumers who are relatively new to gaining information about hemp oil products, there’s a difference in what hemp seed oil is and what hemp extract oils are. There is also a difference in CBD isolate and full spectrum hemp extract oil.
Hemp seed oil comes from the hemp seed being pressed. This oil carries a high concentration of omegas, the essential fatty acids necessary for life. That oil is an excellent anti-inflammatory food source. It has a mild nutty flavor. It's not super stable, which means the shelf-life is rather short compared to other oils, and you need to keep it refrigerated after opening. It's not good oil to cook with grandma, so don't go frying chicken in it. Enjoy it in raw form. Hemp seed oil is not a source of CBD, but it has awesome nutrition and vitamin E.
Just so you know, the remaining cake of the pressed hemp seed can be milled providing a highly nutritious hemp powder. Since the hemp seed carry 20-amino acids, including the 9-essential amino acids, the powder is a complete, high protein food that’s easily digestible - outpacing meat, fish, eggs, cheese, soy; human or cow’s milk.
Hemp extract oil is better identified as an essential oil from the hemp plant. The entire plant is used for the extraction process in pulling out all the plant's phytonutrients. A sticky distillate resin oil is the result. That resin is where the cbd is. There are also hundreds of other cannabinoids, terpenes and nutrients in that oil.
Both types of oils, hemp seed oil and hemp extract oil can be very beneficial in reducing inflammation in the body. The oils provide different nutritional benefits. Hemp seed oil has a high concentration of omegas, the good fats and Vitamin E, but it’s not a natural source of cannabinoids.
A hemp plant can contain over 400 cannabinoids and phytonutrients compounds. Certain genetics of hemp plants are sought after to produce good quality, full spectrum extract oils. Hemp plant cultivars high in Cannabidiol (CBD) are what producers seek to make an extract distillate oil that will be abundant in CBD. Hemp plants carry very little Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) the cannabinoid that when heated can make you feel high.
Full Spectrum oil vs CBD isolate:
A full spectrum oil from hemp has all the phytocannabinoids the plant has to offers. If you see a product that contains CBD isolate – you’re getting just that; Cannabidiol only one of the many cannabinoid the hemp plant offers. When its an isolate, its excluding all the others phytonutrients.
There are studies that indicate the phytocannabinoids within the hemp plant are closely related on a cellular level in helping to support the endocannabinoid system (ECS) within the human body. In laywomen terms, when you feel like crap, your ECS could be out of sync causing you pain, discomfort, anxiety and other ailments.*
If you're ready to give CBD a try because Thelma said they worked for her, have at it. One of our best sellers is cinnamon. It quite pleasant tasting and even meets the approval of my 90-year-old mother.
If you're into the real science behind all this, check out The Father of Cannabis, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam. He's been studying cannabis for over 50-years and is the expert. He explains all about how the ECS carries out reactions in the immune and nervous systems and all of the body’s organs. How a breakdown in the ECS may be linked to disease and how CBDs may help support the ECS.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is just one of hundreds of cannabinoids that has been identified within the cannabis plant.
High quality food grade hemp extract oil should be extracted with CO2, not alcohol.
Yes, CBD is awesome, but the mighty hemp seed is also worthy of consuming too. #EatSomeHemp

Proper nutrition is VITAL in fighting cancer. Chemo steals important nutrients and minerals from your body while making the attack to mitigate those nasty cancer cells.
Hemp seed provide maximum nutrition with minimum consumption. Ounce per ounce there is no food source that is more nutrient dense and well-rounded with vitamins and minerals than hemp seeds. They’re an excellent source of magnesium too, which can be one of the many extremely important minerals that chemo robs from the body.
Yes, there are all kinds of supplements, chemically made drinks, and powder concoctions that are available for you to buy. More chemicals to try to beat the toxic effects of chemicals you’re already taking in. (Plz know, we aren’t passing judgment on chemotherapy as there are many folks who are alive because of chemo.)
We’re here to let you know there’s an easy, cost effective, REAL food that can help bring you the balanced nutrition you need. Hemp seeds!
The fiber in the whole seed can help rid your body of the free radicals and sugars. The hulled hemp seed is an easy addition to anything, bringing you the nourishment your body craves. Adding a tablespoon of hemp protein powder with 3 to 4 tablespoons of hemp hearts to a smoothie will outdo anything you will find concocted in a supplement drink or one of those made-up powders from a plastic container. #EatSomeHemp
]]>These silly incorrect notions have been floating around for years. (Even the most educated of people will make attempts to say they cannot eat hemp seeds because they can't take a "chance" of failing their drug test) Get with it people! It's ridiculous and unfounded. Not sure who started these misconception, but its time end 'm.
Hemp seeds are a plant based, complete protein. They provide maximum nutrition with minimum consumption. They're your one-crop stop for getting tough and buff. Drop the chips! Help the hips! Pick-up a bag of hemp seeds. #EatSomeHemp
]]>Cannabis contains hundreds of phytonutrients that are very beneficial in supporting good health. Hemp is distinctly different from marijuana in that it contains less than .3% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the phytonutrient in cannabis that when heated produces a psychoactive euphoric effect. Cannabidiol (CBD) is another phytonutrient within cannabis, which certain cultivars of hemp are specifically grown for their elevated amount of CBD contents. Many people have found consuming hemp extract oils that are high in CBDs to aid in pain relief; reduction in stress and anxiety, inflammatory issues, immune disorders and encourage restful sleep, among other benefits. CBDs are not psychoactive. You won't get high from consuming CBDs. #EatSomeHemp
]]>Finally we've joined the rest of the world and put an end to outdated U. S. Federal Drug Policy. It has also put a rest and cleared up the controversy regarding hemp extracts.
On 01/01/2019 all products produced from hemp are legal in all 50 States, including hemp extract oil products. Cannabinoids are included within this Bill, meaning cannabidiol (CBD's) from hemp are not a controlled substance.
(Please note, Cousin Mary Jane has always taken the position that CBDs from hemp were legal based on the 2004 Supreme Court ruling, which stated all products from hemp were legal), but now the message is 100% clear.
Hemp extracts, including CBDs derived from hemp plants are firmly identified as NOT being a controlled substance! (Eat your heart out DEA and Big Pharma!) Hemp is not a drug, it never has been.
Special interest's have worked for over 80-years to keep hemp from U.S. farm fields and away from being utilized for food, fiber, fuel, medicine, and more. Hemp was miss-classified decades ago when it was erroneously placed within the Control Substance Act by President Nixon. The time has come and we can move forward doing the Happy Dance!
Cousin Mary Jane, Lady Jane Gourmet Seed Co and Better Way Botanicals have been working since 2010 to bring you top quality hemp products and advocating for this change. We were the first manufacturer in Michigan to apply and receive our license for packaging and selling hemp seed food products. Our company's mission has been to bring better access to better healthful choices. We're very excited to continue and bring you more!
We recognize we didn't do it alone! We thank our customers and all the advocates wholeheartedly for your support and encouragement. We look forward to bringing more hemp into more people's lives. May 2019 bring you a Healthful New Year.

Cousin Mary Jane
]]>In growing up in the 1960's, my mother was a bit of a drill sergeant. If we purchased something packaged from the grocery store, reading the ingredients on the box was mandatory. I just figured, everybody did that. Its similar to growing up going to Catholic school, then finding out in your mid-teens that there's a thing called divorce. You just don't know any better because you weren't exposed to it.
If you're not a label reader, I'm encouraging you start. Take the time to read the ingredients of the foods you're about to put in your mouth. It's really not that difficult. Teach your children to pay attention too. If an ingredient is questionable as to what it might be, maybe you want to think twice about eating it.
Which brings me to the subject of SUGAR.
The other day I purchased a can of organic tomatoes from my local grocery store. Shame on me! I was in a hurry and didn't read the ingredients. I had mistakenly thought, organic tomatoes, what else could be in there?
Sugar! That's what! (It wasn't the first ingredient, but still unnecessary, and a wrong assumption on my part.) Yes, I was pretty aggravated, but it go to show you, you need to look.
Sugar is the other white powder and it has made its way into just about everything on our store shelves. Now I'm not talking about the sugar you get when you eat a banana; I'm talking the about the white granulated stuff.
Most people's taste buds have been conditioned to want sugar and many are now addicted to over eating it. If sweet is not present, their food has little flavor. Their brains have been conditioned to constantly crave it. It's become an addiction.
As a Nation, we're getting fatter, sicker and grumpier. It doesn’t take scientific studies to support this, just look around you. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and numerous other malnutrition diseases can be attributed to too much sugar. If you don't make a conscious effort to limit your sugar intake, it can take you over, (inclusive of artificial sweeteners and syrups that have been developed in Petri dishes).
Don't be fooled by the word "healthy". From granola & protein bars to cereal; to organic canned tomatoes to soda pop; take a moment to read the sugar content on the label. How many grams are in a serving? Make a conscious effort to pay attention to how much you're eating (or serving to your children), or avoid it all together. Most people are eating way more sugar than they realize; and substituting the fake stuff is no good either.
Lets do some 2nd grade math:
It may surprise you that you could be eating well over 100g of sugar in a day. If you happen to be working hard trying to follow a diet program by counting points, macros, or buying into some meal plan, do yourself a favor, pay attention to the sugar. Don't assume there's a green light. Look before you eat.
Lady Jane Gourmet Seed Co has a couple of protein bar mixes that put you, the consumer, in charge of adding your desired sweetener. This is to give you control for your individual dietary needs. We suggest using natural maple syrup or honey, but coconut oil can be substituted if you require zero sugar.
Check 'm out. Its a bonus they're naturally gluten free and free of they soy.

]]>I have the pleasure of meeting many of our customers face to face at vending events where we sell our hemp seed food products. It has been my experience that his whole thing about fats is confusing to many folks. Maybe its just the word "fat" that starts the confusion. It's important to understand, all fats are not created equal.
Many times when people go on a kind of simplified diet program that focuses on zero to low fats, BOOM! They end up in a jam. Often when the so-called fat is removed from a food, other stuff, like sugar is added increasing empty calories. (Don't even get me started on sugar, it's the other white, addictive powder killing people.) Fake stuff and/or artificial sweeteners can also be substituted making it even more harmful to the body. Worse yet, people are misinformed and they miss out on getting their much needed Essential Fatty Acids because they don't eat foods with good fats.
Essential Fatty Acids are vital for healthful body function. They're essential because the body can't make them so you must get them from the food you eat. Omegas are a subgroup of fatty acids (the good fats). The three major categories are, Omega -3, -6 and -9. Omega 3 and 6, are essential because the body cannot make them. You must get them from foods like fish, flaxseed, chia, avocado, vegetable oils and the almighty hemp seed. Omega 9, although needed, is not considered an essential fatty acid because our body can produce them.
Tossing big words around like alpha-
It's understandable that seeking out foods with balanced omegas can be difficult and confusing. I don't make the rules for nutrition fact labeling requirements, but I think it's a huge disservice that the U.S. nutrition facts do not include identifying the omega profile a food may provide. A food manufacture can put a tag line on a package stating omegas are in the food, but there is no suggested daily requirement or a percentage within the nutrition fact label to help guide people.
Compounding the problem, if a person is trying to pay better attention to what they're eating and making attempts to read the nutrition facts, fatty acids are not necessarily segregated from fats and they can be lumped into total fats, so people mistakenly avoid them.
Eating the right ratio of of omega -3, -6 and -9 fatty acids is important for good health. What’s cool is hemp seeds provide a perfectly balanced omega profile of 3, 6 and 9; giving your body the proper fats it needs for healthful body function!
There may be some folks out there who will argue this hemp seed testament. That's probably because most people tend to get too much omega 6 in their SAD (Standard American Diet). This does not negate the fact that the hemp seed is an excellent, well rounded, nutrient dense food choice, including omegas. #EatSomeHemp
]]>The tiny hemp seed is chocked full of 20 amino acids, including the 9-essencial amino acids needed to provide you with all the building blocks for maintaining good health. It’s complete, it’s not an isolate and nothing is fortified.
So you ask; just want is a complete protein?
A complete protein is a protein that contains all (9) nine essential amino acids.
In wondering around the world-wide web, seeking information about protein, you may find articles that make claim that only animal-based products carry a complete proteins. That's not correct. Hemp seeds are plant based; and yes they contain all the essential amino acids.
An incomplete protein is one that does not carry all (9) nine essential amino acids. Now, this doesn't mean a food source that doesn't have a complete protein is not good, it means you need to combine it with other foods to make the protein complete.Such as eating rice and beans together, you accomplish combining two foods, which then provide you with all the essential amino acids.
As a kid, my mother always made us eat a peanut butter sandwich with a glass of milk. Peanuts, bread and milk are another combination that can accomplish that task.
But eating a complete protein allows your body to easily digest the protein thus putting it to work doing what it does best in the body. Given the right proportion of amino acids, our bodies can function. Proteins are needed for proper hormone production, muscle tissue, blood cells, enzyme production, strong nails, shiny hair, and even clear skin. For some people, they can experience tummy issues, like gas and upset when they eat an unbalanced protein profile.
Soy, buckwheat, and quinoa are other go-to plant based protein food sources. They are all an excellent food choice, but here is some big news. Hemp seeds, ounce per ounce, provide more nutrition than any of those.
People have been eating hemp seeds for centuries. However over the last 80 years the world has been misinformed as to what hemp actually is. The lack of information regarding the nutrition of hemp seeds extends to even folks with master's degree in nutrition. Many universities don't even include hemp in their curriculum. Its craziness. Eating hemp seeds won't make you high. Eating hemp seeds won't cause you to fail a drug test. Hemp seeds provide outstanding nutrition. Now you know. Don't deny yourself access to this excellent food source. #EatSomeHemp

]]>Hemp often gets a bad rap because people associate it with marijuana. However, hemp is not marijuana. It won’t “get you high.” You won’t fail a drug test from eating it. You will however, reap the benefits of eating one of the healthiest foods in the world. Hemp foods provide some of the best nutrition of any superfood.
Check out some of the awesome health benefits.
1. Protein Packed
Hemp, gram for gram is one of the highest protein packed foods. With just over 31 grams of protein per 100 grams, hemp stands up to other foods that are high in protein. Hemp based plant protein has a rating of 40, meaning that not only is the protein in hemp abundant in a high amount but it's high in quality as well.
2. Great Source of Fatty Acids
Hemp is a great source of fatty acids. The human body needs proper fats for healthful body function. Hemp seeds contain about 80% of polyunsaturated fatty acids (the good stuff) and only about 10% of saturated fatty acids (the bad stuff). Additionally, hemp seeds are a great source of Omega 3, Omega 6, and GLA’s.
3. Gluten Free
Gluten allergies are becoming more of the norm. That being said, there’s been an increase in the need for gluten-free options. Hemp seeds and hemp based products are completely free of gluten. From farm to table, Lady Jane takes special care to maintain its gluten free integrity. All products are prepared, blended and packaged in a certified gluten free facility. This includes our hemp flour and our hemp protein, Hempagizer.
4. Vegetarian and Vegan
Those who choose vegetarian or vegan lifestyle diets should be extremely happy to include hemp into their daily eating. Hemp is a plant based protein and has more digestible protein than meat, whole eggs, fish, cheese, human milk, cow’s milk or any other source of high protein foods.
5. High In: magnesium, fiber, and vitamin E
Hemp is a tremendous source of magnesium, vitamin E, and fiber. Just three tablespoons of Lady Jane’s hemp hearts provide 50% of your daily value of magnesium and 77% of vitamin E. Also, eating just a few handfuls of whole hemp seeds will allow you to reach the recommended daily amount of fiber.
6. Low In: saturated fat, cholesterol carbohydrates
Hemp seeds and other hemp-based foods are low in saturated fats. They only contain about 10% of the “bad fats.” The complex carbohydrates in the whole hemp seed carry numerous healthful benefits, including helping to lower blood sugar. Additionally, hemp seeds can help lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol which in turn will help improve your heart health.
7. Bodily functions: great for brain activity, immune function, and weight loss
As little as three tablespoons of hemp seeds per day can help improve your health. It has been documented that hemp improves brain activity, is great for digestive health and helps with weight loss.

Tomatoes – an interesting history: Tomatoes were once known as wolf peaches, and until around 1820, they were thought to be deadly poisonous. Over the years there has been much controversy as to whether a tomato was a fruit or a vegetable. Through most of the 1800’s, tomatoes were considered a fruit, and according to botanists, the tomato is a fruit.
On May 10, 1893, the Supreme Court of the United States set forth a ruling that legally made the tomato a vegetable. The reasoning behind this ruling was not to set the scientific record straight; it was to induce the ability to collect tax dollars. At that time, vegetables were taxable. Fruits were not. Like a lot of our governmental policies it was all about money, not necessarily truth.
In 1897, Joseph Campbell & Co with the help of a chemist developed a method of condensing tomato soup. In a time frame of about fifty years, this red-fleshy food went from public opinion thinking a person would die upon eating them to being canned and sold by fruit merchant, Joseph Campbell. Next time you munch on a grill cheese sandwich with a cup of tomato soup, thank Colonel Robert Gibbon Johnson for that yummy combo (Eat Hemp, Not Cheese & Gluten). He took it upon himself to disprove the myth about tomatoes being poisonous.
Colonel Johnson went to Salem, New Jersey on September 26, 1820, and stood on the courthouse steps and ate one tomato after another while the crowd watched in amazement. When he didn’t drop dead after making a spectacle of himself, folks quickly realized tomatoes were harmless and actually rather good to eat!
Botanically, I’m not aware that tomatoes and hemp have anything in common, but historically I find they share quite a parallel. For nearly a century, the American public has been misguided when it comes to hemp. Myths led the public into the wrong direction and our government succeeded in manipulating the truth.
Although hemp is a variety of cannabis, hemp carries no psychoactive elements, it is not a drug. The hemp seed provides one of the most nutritiously dense foods known to man. They are high in easily digestible protein and carry 18 amino acids, plus numerous vitamins and minerals. Hemp seeds provide one of the highest concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids categorized as Omega-6 and Omega-3 in an ideal 3:1 ratio; thus hemp seeds are considered a perfectly balanced super food.
Cousin Mary Jane is standing on the courthouse steps shouting to the world that eating hemp will not make you “HIGH”! You will not drop dirty if being tested for drugs. Hemp is not the belladonna that some would like you to think! Don’t let political propaganda keep you from good nutrition. Try Cousin Mary Jane's Toasted Hemp Seeds, they are delicious and nutritious. Did I mention public opinion?

]]>The demonization of hemp and marihuana took center stage when Harry Anslinger was appointed as the first commissioner of theU.S. Treasury Departments Federal Bureau of Narcotics in 1930. Anslinger set off reefer madness hysteria. He made claim white women would seek out having sex with black men if they got their hand on a “marihuana” cigarette. He boasted how “marihuana” was a violent aggressive “drug” and it would make people “insane”.
This was prime timing and fuel for newspaper giant William Randolph Hearst, industrialist Lammont DuPont II, and U.S. Secretary of Treasury Andrew Mellon who all were financially motivated in wanting to see hemp snuffed out of the American market. It was Hearts and his publication that came up with the slang term “marihuana” [today also spelled marijuana] for the cannabis indica Lam plant. This is the variety of cannabis that gets tiny trichomes containing Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinols (THC). THC is the psychoactive substance that people associate with getting “high”. The stuff Harry Anslinger did not like that the “Negros and Mexicans” were smoking.
Hemp (cannabis sativa L) was a direct competitor to paper and petroleum. Further, Henry Ford was working on constructing an automobile made from the cellulose in the hemp plant and he intended to use hemp oil to fuel it. Hearst was good friends with DuPont who was working on patents for a new process which would make paper from wood. Hearst was the largest owner of wooded forests. The DuPont family had additional financial interests in synthetic fibers, petroleum oil and GM. The two were good friends with Andrew Mellon who was the uncle to Harry Anslinger. Hearst, DuPont and Mellon had a great deal to financially gain if confusion and hysteria occurred with cannabis indica Lam (marihuana) and cannabis sativa L (hemp) the non-psychoactive strain of cannabis; especially if they were packaged in one bundle.
Eventually all this muss & fuss over "marihuana" would lead to the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937. Since marihuana was a slang word used by Hearst newspaper, many were unaware at that time that "marihuana" was actually cannabis and hemp. The Tax Act did not necessarily set out to outlaw hemp, the act was imposed to try to tax hemp to death. The possession or transfer of hemp and cannabis indica in the United States became illegal without a permit, yet permits were rarely granted. This paved the way to prohibition of all varieties of cannabis.
During World War II, farmers were requested to grow hemp for the war effort in a campaign titled "Hemp for Victory". It didn't last long. DuPont sparked legislation to outlaw hemp in the 1950s. Harry Anslinger was continuing his crusade, now claiming marihuana would lead to communistic brainwashing. He remained at the helm until 1962. Next in line would be Richard Nixon.
President Nixon made matters worse for hemp when he placed it within the Controlled Substance Act of 1970. Nixon decided to classify cannabis/marihuana/hemp in the worst of the categories, placing it as a Schedule I Controlled Substance along with heroin and other highly addictive, no medical use drugs. The Shafer Commission, Nixon’s own appointed committee, had advised against placing cannabis as a control substance at all. Nixon’s personal prejudices contributed to going against his advisors. This strict classification scheduling system ended up including industrial hemp even though it was known it did not contain psychoactive properties.
When the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was signed it into power on July 28, 1973 by Nixon, just days before his resignation in August, the DEA was given the authority to enforce the Controlled Substance Act. Since 1973, the DEA has had control over the hemp plant, which is not a drug; it cannot be used to manufacture a drug. Hemp is a plant that is a nutritionally dense food source and a renewable raw material.
This outdated federal policy continues today due to ignorance and money. Removing hemp from the Controlled Substance Act has nothing to do with being “soft on drugs”. Although the DEA recognized that hemp is not a drug, they will not release permits to grow the crop, which could benefit consumers and manufactures. The DEA claims the hemp plant would allow for marijuana plants to be hidden within the same field and cause control problems. This is not true. The industrial hemp plant and the cannabis plant known as marijuana, though similar, are different looking and sow differently. The DEA is spending millions of US tax dollars on eradicating hemp plants, also known as "Ditch Weed" from farm fields, which are the hardy descendants of hemp grown by farmers decades ago during WWII.
The United States is one of the only industrialized counties that does not allow the cultivation of hemp. Any politician or public official, who does not want to support hemp farming in the US is either misinformed or is being led astray by the special interests who continue to benefit from hemp prohibition.
While the DEA uses our tax dollars to destroy industrial hemp plants, farmers in Canada and Europe are making millions from the hemp plant for use of food, clothing, car parts and the thousands of manufacturing products; while the U.S is left to importing.

]]>“Well, Cousin Mary Jane”, replied Grandfather Hemp. “Some of the problem started with the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937. Confusion, myths, dirty politics and some large corporations all contributed to our demise in being able to be cultivated by U.S. farmers. It’s a real shame, but the demand for hemp in the United States is growing again. However, currently, if companies or consumers want to engage in using the raw materials or eating foods from hemp, it must be imported from other countries. U.S farmers cannot grow the crop due to outdated federal policies which confuse industrial hemp with the THC variety of cannabis.”
“But Grandfather Hemp,” interrupted Cousin Mary Jane. “I thought the world, along with the United States was getting wiser to being more green. Hemp is the greenest crop that can be cultivated and the raw material of the hemp plant can be used to produce countless green products.”
“Yes, the science it there to support all this, Cousin Mary Jane, but it's not enough,” Grandfather Hemp responded.“Dirty politics, corporatism and lack of public knowledge continue this blockade against us. A field of hemp within a few months can provide the natural resources for so many things that are useful and strong, yet biodegradable that it is truly incredible. Growing hemp does not require a lot of water; tons of chemicals and pesticides are not needed; and it naturally provides nutrients back to the soil so farm fields are not stripped after it has been harvested. The growing of the hemp plant can actually clean the soil from contaminants. It’s called phytoremediation.”
“Further,” continued Grandfather Hemp. “Not only can hemp provide the world with a viable green energy source; as a food, I know of no other plant that can provide the nutritional value that comes from the hemp seed. Hemp seeds contain all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life. The balance of the omega 3 and 6 within the hemp seed is considered a perfectly balanced oil for human consumption. It’s hard for me to understand why the food from the hemp seed is not utilized more to help feed starving children around the world. It’s quite silly really.”
“Grandfather Hemp, what can I do to help?” Inquired Cousin Mary Jane.
“Well Cousin Mary Jane," sighed Grandfather Hemp. "You will need to be an Ambassador and tell anyone who will listen. People must to be educated and understand all we can do. They need to know hemp is not a drug. If the United States would embraced the hemp industry, and allowed our farm fields to once again be abundant with hemp it would be wonderful.”
“The United States is the only industrial country that virtually prohibits its farmers from growing this low input, high cash yielding crop. Selling products and food of industrial hemp is perfectly legal. The U.S. economy could benefit from this whole industry. Our farm fields are perfect for growing hemp. The United States could be a world leader with the production of hemp products. It could mean JOBS! It could mean a greener earth!” claimed Grandfather Hemp. “But we need government to act on behalf of its people, not corporate interests, not on ignorance. We need people like you to help bring attention to this so as a crop we are not ignored any longer.”
]]>Basically, it's pretty important, yet according to studies, 50% to 80% of adults in the United States lack sufficient intake of Magnesium. There is concern that many people may not have enough body stores of magnesium because dietary intake may not be high enough. Having enough body stores of magnesium may be protective against disorders such as cardiovascular disease and immune dysfunction. There is an increased interest in the role of magnesium in preventing and managing disorders such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.
Magnesium is a kind of catalyst that helps other vitamins to absorb into your system. Individuals with chronically low blood levels of potassium and calcium may have an underlying problem with magnesium deficiency. The health status of the digestive system and the kidneys significantly influence magnesium status. Dietary magnesium is absorbed in the small intestines. Magnesium is excreted through the kidneys. Gastrointestinal disorders that impair absorption such as Crohn's disease can limit the body's ability to absorb magnesium.
Some studies have concerns that excess Magnesium from supplements may be difficult for kidneys to excrete, thus making it important to get Magnesium by dietary intake from the foods you eat. That old saying, "you are what you eat" has a lot of truth.
Eating nutritiously dense food can be your best defense against many ailments, as well as the fuel to fight health issues. Poor eating can actually be the cause of your illness and can keep your body from healing. Obesity or excessive weight In itself can be the underlying factor to many health problems.
Individuals with chronic malabsorptive problems such as Crohn's disease, gluten sensitive encephalopathy, regional enteritis, and intestinal surgery may have difficulty absorbing Magnesium. To compound the problem, these disorders can deplete the body's stores of magnesium and In extreme cases may result in magnesium deficiency. Chronic or excessive vomiting and diarrhea may also result in magnesium depletion. Is it the lack of Magnesium that is causing these diseases; or is it the disease that is causing the lack of Magnesium? What was first, the chicken or the egg?
When a person's body has reached this point in the disease, it is truly a battle. While Chemotherapy may be ridding your body of cancer, it may also rid you of the much needed Magnesium which is responsible for aiding in so many body functions. Other medicines may result in magnesium deficiency too, including certain diuretics, antibiotics, and medications used to treat cancer (anti-neoplastic medication). Examples of these medications are Diuretics - Lasix, Burnex, Edecrin, and hydrochlorothiazide; Antibiotics - Gentarnicin, and Amphotericin; Antkneoplastic medication - Cisplatin.
Early signs of magnesium deficiency include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and weakness. As magnesium deficiency worsens, numbness, tingling, muscle contractions and cramps, brain seizures, personality changes, abnormal heart rhythms, and coronary spasms can occur. Severe magnesium deficiency can result in low levels of calcium in the blood (hypccatcernia) and low levels of potassium in the blood (hypokaleme).
Working on nutrition to stay ahead of the game can be your best defense. Darker green vegetables, such as spinach are a good source of magnesium. Some legumes (beans and peas), nuts and seeds, and whole, unrefined grains are also good sources of magnesium. One of the most outstanding food sources for Magnesium is the hemp seed. The hemp seed is one of Mother Nature's most perfect foods. The seed can be eaten whole or hulled. Hemp flour comes from the milled seed and can be used for baking or eaten as a raw food In a smoothie.
Eating Cousin Mary Jane's hemp foods daily will help you get the Magnesium your body needs!
